Autumn 2021 promises to be very Eventful in New Castle… See below for a (non-exhaustive) preview of what’s coming our way!

September 9-12
New Castle Court House Museum presents its annual Chautauqua educational event on Delaware history: “American enterprise and ingenuity will be brought to life in ‘The I's Have It: Industry, Innovation, and Invention.’” On the Green.
Saturday, September 11
The 20th anniversary of the 9/11/2001 terror attacks will feature two memorial events in Battery Park:
• 4 pm: The First State Fools will host a one mile run/walk along the Battery Park trail, starting and ending at the flag pole, “to honor and remember not only the 411 first responders of the FDNY, NYPD and PAPD but all victims in NYC, at the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.”
• 6 pm: Good Will Fire Company and New Castle PD for a Memorial Service near the South Street entrance to the park. The service will feature “the presentation of colors by the Delaware State Police Honor Guard, … remarks by City of New Castle Mayor Michael Quaranta, music by the New Castle Methodist Church Choir and Good Will Ladies Auxiliary member Regina Oliver, remarks by NCPD Chief McCabe and GWFC Chief Majewski, Jr., and a video presentation remembering that fateful day.”
Monday, September 13
The Wilmington Area Planning Council will host a public workshop in Battery Park to solicit input from New Castilians regarding local transportation issues. 7pm.
September 13-25
The voting period begins for a Trustee Election to fill a vacancy on the board of the Trustees of the New Castle Common. More information about how to register and vote are available in our 8/22 post about the Trust.
Wednesday, September 15
The New Castle Historical Society will host its Annual Garden Party at the Dutch House and Amstel House. From 5:30 to 7:30 that evening, the “Dutch House garden will have the food & refreshments that the Garden Party is known for, while the Amstel House yard will transform into a beer garden with local brews and soft pretzels to celebrate Oktoberfest!” Tickets are required, and are available here.
Saturday, September 18
8:15 am: the Delaware Ovarian Cancer Foundation’s 11th Annual Teal Ribbon 5K Run/Walk will depart St. Peter’s School and snake its way through the streets of Historic New Castle. Register today to take part in the event, designed to raise awareness and funds to combat this pernicious disease.
5:30 pm: New Castle’s nascent Arts Council will host MUSART, an evening of music, art and food, set to transform Delaware Street from 5th to the Wharf into a vibrant venue for street performers, artists and vendors for three delightful hours. Further details to come.
Friday, September 24
7:30 pm: The New Castle Saint Anthony Society will host an Oldies Dance Party at Saint Peter’s Gymnasium, featuring Jerry Blavat, “the Geater with the Heater” (runs until 10:30). Tickets are required.
8 pm: The City of New Castle and the new Arts Council present Movie Night featuring The Goonies, a free event in Battery Park. Bring a chair and a flashlight to join neighbors and friends in discovering or re-enjoying this 80’s cult classic!
Saturday, September 25
Candidates to become a Trustee of the New Castle Common will make themselves available for questions and discussion at the William Penn statue on New Castle Common from 8am to 12 noon. The Trustee Election also ends at noon.
Art on the Green returns from 10am to 4pm in Battery Park, hosted by the New Castle Hundred Lions Club. With dozens of arts and crafts vendors, a handful of food trucks and plenty of activity for visitors of all ages, this 50th Anniversary AOTG promises to be fun for all.
This year’s AOTG will also feature the return of the Annual Book Sale presented by New Castle Library Friends. All book sale proceeds go to support the New Castle Public Library, which is hosting its own “Tiny Art Showcase” in conjunction with Art on the Green - stop by to get your tiny canvas today!
Saturday, October 2
Starting at 9am, historic sister-cities New Castle and Delaware City will host the 9th Annual River Towns Ride & Festival. Rides begin at 9am, after which a post-ride party will be held in Del City’s Battery Park, featuring “live music, games, beer, food and non-alcoholic beverages.”
Thursday, October 7
The First Baptist Church of Delaware will host Big Daddy Weave in concert, featuring Anne Wilson (famous for her hit “My Jesus”). Tickets are required.
Friday, October 8 (and other dates)
New Castle Historical Society’s popular, annual Hauntings in History tours return, inviting visitors to “beware of goblins, ghosts and poltergeists as you venture out on autumn evenings and discover the darker side of history!”
Saturday, October 16
The New Castle Senior Center will host its Harvest Bazaar from 9 to 2, featuring home-made crafts, baked goods and more… check out page 5 of the current newsletter for more info, as well as the Facebook Event.
Sunday, October 17
OperaDelaware will present a “Pop-Up Opera” performance on The Green at 3pm. This free event is sponsored by the City and Arts Council.
October 28-30
New Castle’s own Oak Knoll Books & Press will host the virtual Oak Knoll Fest XXI, featuring “speaker presentations and a fine press book fair” with a theme of “Women in the Book Arts.”
Regular Meetings & Events
In addition to the special events above, the city’s regular schedule of meetings continues through the Fall. The schedule and details for upcoming meetings of City Council, the Historic Area Commission, the Planning Commission, and more, is available on the city website. City Council meetings are now held at the Senior Center on South Street, while other city meetings are held in the Community Room at 1 Municipal Drive (NCPD).
