'News, Views, and Stuff to Do!'
Through original reporting and media aggregation, New Castle City Topics offers local news, community events, discussions with town leaders and tastemakers, and media showing off the best of New Castle, Delaware. It seeks to highlight the rich history and complex public life of this 350 year old riverfront town.
On Facebook, Instagram, and occasionally NextDoor, City Topics posts about goings-on within and cool details about New Castle. However, some topics and subjects deserve more thought and attention - and those longer features are here on the Substack site and newsletter.

Honors and Awards for New Castle City Topics
Recurring guest contributor Linda Suskie brought two awards home to New Castle in the 2025 Delaware Press Association Communications Contest for stories published in City Topics in 2024. She won First Place among Environmental articles for her story about Arasapha’s role in the history of New Castle’s streetside trees, and Second Place among History articles for her story about the city’s street signs through the years. City Topics also won First among General/Feature Photos for the photograph below, “Battery Park Sunrise.”
In 2024, City Topics guest contributor Linda Suskie won First Place - History Article for her excellent story about May Market’s First 80 Years in New Castle, in the Delaware Press Association’s Professional Communications Contest for works published in 2023. One of our photos also got 2nd Place for general photography.
In 2023, City Topics earned five awards in the DPA Contest, including a First Place for one of our photos showing off New Castle (above)… and some very exciting awards for written work too…
In 2022, Town Topics: New Castle - the original name of this project - won four awards in DPA’s contest, including First Place for its Social Media Presence (which received an Honorable Mention in national competition); and Third Place in the ‘Personality Profile’ category for “A Life Between the Cobblestones,” about the late Ted Joslin.
In 2000, long before this project was even a twinkle in his eye, admin Matt Alexander - for whom journalism and telling good stories has been a lifelong passion - received First Place for News Writing at the Temple University Press Tournament.
